Question
I've heard that you mustn't exercise within the evening because it could actually disrupt restful sleep. Is this true?
Oh Traditional sleep hygiene guidelines include a advice to avoid exercising late within the day. However, research shows that many individuals can exercise within the evening so long as it's near their bedtime.
A 2021 study i Frontiers in Public Health analyzed the consequences of evening exercise on sleep duration and quality in nearly 13,000 people, and located that moderate-vigorous activity accomplished no less than three hours before bedtime didn't interfere with sleep. A 2025 study i Nature Communications Advised to exercise 4 hours before bedtime.
In addition to sticking to that evening exercise time-frame, you too can practice good sleep hygiene by doing the next:
- Set an everyday bedtime and adopt a soothing bedtime routine
- Turn off devices that give off light, similar to TVs, computers, and phones, no less than an hour before bed.
- Make sure your bed is comfortable, and your bedroom is dark, quiet and funky.
- Do not take long naps in the course of the day. If you want to take a nap, limit it to twenty to half-hour within the early afternoon.
- If you'll be able to't go to sleep after 15 to twenty minutes, move to a different room. Read silently until you go to sleep.
