Men who follow energetic surveillance for prostate cancer can improve their results by doing high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Researchers had 52 men (average age 63) on energetic surveillance either do supervised HIIT exercise three days every week for 12 weeks or follow their usual exercise routine that didn't include high-intensity exercise.
With HIIT, you perform a near-maximal effort for a brief interval followed by a brief rest period. Then you repeat this pattern a certain variety of times. In the trial, exercise consists of two minutes of exercise at 85% to 95% of an individual's VO2 max (the utmost amount of oxygen that might be used during exercise), then 40% of VO2 max. Two minute recovery. The pattern was repeated five to eight times.
The researchers found that in comparison with individuals who did their usual low-intensity exercise, those within the HIIT group had lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, lower PSA velocity (the change in PSA levels over time rate), and their prostates were sluggish. Cancer cell growth. His cardiovascular health was also higher. The researchers identified that men with energetic surveillance were thrice more prone to die from heart disease than from prostate cancer typically. Results published online on 19 August 2021.
