Does exercising within the evening affect sleep?

Question
I've heard that you mustn't exercise within the evening because it might disrupt restful sleep. Is this true?

Oh Traditional sleep hygiene guidelines include a suggestion to avoid exercising late within the day. However, research shows that many individuals can exercise within the evening so long as it's near their bedtime.

A 2021 study i Frontiers in Public Health analyzed the results of evening exercise on sleep duration and quality in nearly 13,000 people, and located that moderate-vigorous activity accomplished not less than three hours before bedtime didn't interfere with sleep. A 2025 study i Nature Communications Advised to exercise 4 hours before bedtime.

In addition to sticking to that evening exercise timeframe, you may also practice good sleep hygiene by doing the next:

  • Set a daily bedtime and adopt a soothing bedtime routine
  • Turn off light sources corresponding to TV, computer and phone not less than an hour before going to bed.
  • Make sure your bed is comfortable, and your bedroom is dark, quiet and funky.
  • Do not take long naps through the day. If you wish a nap, limit it to twenty to half-hour within the early afternoon.
  • If you'll be able to't go to sleep after 15 to twenty minutes, move to a different room. Read silently until you go to sleep.
